Halo

"Wake me. When you need me." - John 117

Halo is "The" video game for me, and ever since first stepping out that escape pod onto an alien ring world, the series has held a special place in my heart.

Halo: Combat Evolved was the first time I realised a video game can be more than "number go up". They could be experiences, stories. The fun of playing your way was the point, not being 1st. Obviously that element of games in general was present, but it wasn't the sole focus. It was truly amazing.

The sequels just seemed to expand on themselves and provide a better and better experience. When I finally managed to get an xbox live subscription, the sky was the limit. Matchmaking, Custom Games, Theatre Mode, File Browsing and an ever changing hand picked selection of community made screenshots, maps and game modes. It didn't really feel like just a video game. It was a social hub, a place you could "go".

I love every game in the series (even Halo 5). I will always love every and any Halo game.

Split Fiction

"Pet me or die, Human!" - The Ice King

This was the most consistent fun I've ever had playing a video game, hands down. I absolutely love this game.

Split Fiction introduces something new every 5 minutes. There are so many mechanics and fun little side quests to do. They never overstay their welcome and are a genuine blast to play through. If there is something that annoys you, it doesn't stick around to wind you up.

There is so much love and care poured into Split Fiction. The references to other games alone are extremely well done and clearly come form a place of respect and appreciation.

The genuine love for the medium is rivalled only by the mechanics. No spoilers, but I have no idea how they pulled the end sequence off and I'm a software engineer! Truely amazing work, a joy to play again and again!

RE:Requiem Cover

Resident Evil: Requiem

"I'll stop you as many times as I have to." - Leon S. Kennedy

Even though I've only recently played this, and it's already one of my all time favourite games.

I've only played the more recent entries in the series (RE:7 onwards), so can't speak for its faithfulness to the older games. But I really enjoyed the dual perspective/gameplay. Grace was new to the world of bioweapons and terrified in both character and gameplay. Leon is a seasoned veteran and is used to putting down hordes of zombies, which again shows in the gameplay.

Resident Evil games are known for their replayability, but oddly this is the first one I've found wanting to go back and replay it. The others I've played felt too big, too involved, too daunting for a replay unless I was really in the mood for one. This one, for me, is juuust short enough that I want to replay it, without being too short that I was left disappointed.

Absolutely recommend for someone looking to see what Resident Evil is about. It's got the horror, it's got the action. What's not to love?

Resident Evil: Requiem (Again)

Currently doing a challenge run to unlock infinite ammo, so I can attempt an Insanity playthrough. Wish me luck for that in the future...
